Good morning Blues and welcome to a midweek double of Chelsea Fresh – where we take a look at the latest Chelsea news, transfer rumours and anything else in between.
It was a great night at Stamford Bridge where it saw us get back to winning ways, comfortably beating Maccabi Tel Aviv by four goals to nil. Of course the opposition provided very little in quality and it was an easy win, but it was a hugely important evening for Chelsea, the players, the manager and everyone involved with the football club.
Nothing less than a convincing win would have done and with Jose Mourinho ringing the changes, it was a needed shake up that ended up providing many positives as the end result.
The brightest spark of the night was undoubtedly Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who finally got his deserved start alongside Cesc Fabregas in centre midfield and he didn’t put a foot wrong all game. He went on to contribute all over the park, breaking up play, being an effective guard for the back four, intercepting attacks, creating fast counters and being a real threat whilst using his directness going forward. A top all round performance that rightly earned him Man Of The Match.
At a point where Chelsea are calling out for that extra bite and spark in centre midfield, Loftus-Cheek simply MUST start the next game and he’s certainly proved his worth. I don’t care who gets dropped for him but right now this young England youth International is growing quickly in to one of the best midfielder prospects at the club.
With the news of Paul Pogba allegedly joining Barcelona in January – I really don’t believe that we even need him with the rate of progression and natural quality being shown by our very own Loftus-Cheek. In terms of style both players are similar in the fact that they are hugely effective attacking or defending. Of course I am under no disillusion in thinking that Loftus-Cheek is as good a Pogba, but give him a year and he’ll certainly be up and around that level.
I have been closely following and watching Loftus-Cheek through the youth ranks and I assess his game closely. He has the ability, self-belief, confidence, calmness, speed, strength, vision, tackling ability and a passing to become the main man at Chelsea. He has the type of abilities that Jose Mourinho will love and he can become one of his reliable men. He even has the ability to score goals and a decent finish on him.
I truly believe that this will be his breakthrough season IF given the chances that he deserves. He even has a chance of making the England squad for Euro 2016 if he gets regular game time for Chelsea. He is THAT good.
There is no way we should even be considering spending £80 odd million on one player when we have a player with Ruben’s quality. This is why I wasn’t disappointed that Pogba didn’t sign this summer. If he did, that would have been the end of Loftus-Cheek’s Chelsea career. But we have to give him starts and show him faith. Don’t haul him off if he has a bad game, rely on him and give him those chances.
It is time to progress these youngsters from the academy and show trust in them. We have an incredible amount of talent coming through, we need to show that with Loftus-Cheek, we will get them in the team and they will be an integral part should they show the potential, which Loftus-Cheek certainly has.
He must start against Arsenal. But worryingly in reality, I don’t think he will. I would love to see him in alongside Nemanja Matic and push Fabregas further forward allowing him to create in a more advanced position – especially with the fact that we are missing Pedro and Willian through injury.
That’s it for now Blues but look out for the second part of this edition later today and remember to follow my Twitter here for the very latest Chelsea news – @cfcneteditor
