Chelsea completed the script for Liverpool on a memorable night in both London and Merseyside, as Frank Lampard secured a first victory over Pep Guardiola at Stamford Bridge.
Goals from Christian Pulisic and a penalty for Willian wrapped up a memorable win, two out of two since the Premier League restart for the Blues.
While City dominated possession, it was Chelsea who were more clinical when required. Former Blues midfielder Kevin De Bruyne equalised for the now former champions in the 55th minute, but a Fernandinho hand ball, and subsequent red card turned the game.
Willian slotted home the penalty in the 78th minute, a goal that will prove crucial to Chelsea’s hopes of Champions League football, but significantly it handed Liverpool their first title in 30 years.
It was certainly a night to remember for US international Christian Pulisic who was the CFCnet Man of the Match. The attacker coolly sloted home the opener into the bottom right corner after going one on one with City keeper Ederson. This is Pulisic’s second goal in two games since the league’s restart.
Chelsea go five points clear of Manchester United with all teams now having played 31 games. The Blues are now just one point behind Leicester in third and will surely have designs on overtaking the Foxes by the season’s end.
While CFCnet hope Chelsea’s time will come again, next season if things go well, we say congratulations to the new Premier League champions Liverpool.
