This week has seen Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho claim that he is happy with his current squad and is not looking to sell anyone. We have heard this before! We have also heard him say that we will not be signing any player previously and then the next day, a new signing is announced.
This means nothing in football, yes Mourinho may seemingly be happy with his squad but is the owner? Previously it has been Roman Abramovich who has the last say, makes the decisions and demands the transfers. But more recently it would appear that Mourinho is getting more of a say, so the pendulum can swing in both directions in this situation.
Another reason for stating claims about signing or not signing players is to play down situations. If it gets to the media that Chelsea are in for a player, then that players fee and demand will naturally go up. Look at the Paul Pogba situation, it seemed inevitable that Chelsea would sign Pogba and the media knew this and got heavily involved. All of a sudden other clubs made their moves and the fee being talked about for Pogba has grown to a ridiculous amount. Mourinho I feel is being clever by playing down any moves and doing the same with saying none of his players will be leaving, this puts the ball in his court for potential buyers as he claims he doesn’t need to sell.
So will we sell anyone this summer?
Yes, Petr Cech will certainly leave. I also feel that Didier Drogba will move on to America, Filipe Luis will be too frustrated to spend another season on the bench as will Loic Remy and I can also see a big money move for Oscar being accepted by Chelsea in order to fund a new striker.
Will we sign anyone then?
We will be signing 2 or 3 new players depending on who leaves. Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid could definitely happen, a striker will be a must and the player really wants to join. Another midfielder will arrive too with a host of names being looked at. Finally, an addition to the defence will quite possibly happen as well particularly a full back. There could be surprises though with home grown quota and financial fair play coming in to play, it might not be the big names you are expecting, it could be more likely to be your John Stones or Aaron Cresswell’s of the footballing world. We shall see. Let’s not forget the Raheem Sterling situation, that is certainly being monitored by Chelsea and Sterling is a player that Abramovich would LOVE at Stamford bridge.
There is also the need of a replacement for Cech, but I can see that being a free transfer for an out of contract keeper or a low money move for Rob Green of QPR.
