Chelsea are being increasingly linked with a transfer move for Benfica wonderkid Joao Felix, amid multiple reports including in the Mirror, that the attacking midfielder has a release clause of £45 million in his contract.
However, it’s understood that the Portuguese giants Benfica are keen to tie their 18-year old sensation down to a new long-term deal and most importantly with an increased release clause of over £100 million.
The Mirror suggest that Joao Felix is ‘close’ to agreeing the terms to commit his future to Benfica, and if the release clause is indeed as high as reported, it would all but put him out of Chelsea’s reach for the time being.
The 18-year old has already scored twice this season for the Portuguese club and is said to have been watched by the Blues boss Maurizio Sarri, who is keen to sign the hottest new star from a country that has seemingly never had an issue of producing world-class talent.
It’s no surprise that Benfica are looking to tie Joao Felix down to a new lucrative deal as quickly as possible, as they will know he will eventually be sold to one of Europe’s top clubs – so ensuring maximum value is good business sense, but from a Chelsea perspective, it’s now for around £45 million or wait and pay in excess of double that.
It seems almost a distant memory that just a couple of months ago West Ham were, according to Sky Sports, to be close to sealing the deal for Joao Felix, but for one reason or another opted against making it happen.
