Chelsea are seemingly stepping up their business this month with a report emerging on Wednesday that the Blues have made an approach for West Ham’s top midfielder target.
According to Sky Sports Transfer Centre, the Blues want to sign Benfica’s Gedson Fernandes on an 18-month loan deal, with an obligation to buy down the line for £55 million.
That reported obligation to buy will only be triggered if the Portugues international plays in 50% of all games for that loan duration.
Sky Sports also state that West Ham have made a similar offer, but they have submitted a £33m obligation to buy and their percentage of games is less than Chelsea’s 50% – the offers are now in the hands of Benfica and the player in which way to proceed.
The 20-year-old midfielder struggled early this season with an injury, but appears to have overcome his struggles and has gone on to make 13 appearances in all competitions for Benfica this campaign.
