Transfer news coming from the Blues midweek is that a deal has been agreed to sign highly-rated Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhães from Lille, but Chelsea are ‘one of four clubs’ to have come to the same agreement.

A report in The Sport Review via the Transfer Window Podcast says that Chelsea and Everton are the only two named clubs amongst the four, with the other two unnamed being based in Italy.
A fee is said to be agreed in the region of €35 million for 22-year-old Gabriel Magalhaes who has been crucial to Lille this season, playing 34 games, including six in the Champions League.

Chelsea have been linked to a number of new defensive targets over the last weeks as manager Frank Lampard looks to improve the quality of the backline for his expected second season in-charge of the Blues.

Chelsea have the worst defensive record inside the top seven currently-placed Premier League clubs – Sheffield United in seventh have conceded 14 less goals than the Blues, putting into stark reality the main issue Lampard has to address in the next transfer window.

Gabriel Magalhães, a 6’2ft central defender capped at Brazilian U23 level will have plenty of expectation placed on his shoulders, should he opt for Chelsea over the other three offers – with this being the biggest step up in his career, having previously played for Dinamo Zagreb and Troyes.
