It took just one goal to send Chelsea through to the last 32 of the Europa League and it was only fitting that it was Olivier Giroud who finally netted his first of the season in Belarus.
The goal came less than 10 minutes into the second half with the Frenchman heading in a cross from Emerson – a goal and victory that means Chelsea have won four out of four in Europe this season.
All eyes were on the returning Eden Hazard, his first start since his back injury and in truth didn’t really have any impact on the game – but Maurizio Sarri will be happy to see the Belgian accumulate more minutes before this Sunday’s home game against Everton.

Chelsea Player Ratings vs BATE Borisov

Kepa Arrizabalaga – 6
Clean sheet – but BATE hit the woodwork three times! Could have been a very different story on another night.

Davide Zappacosta – 6

Gary Cahill – 6

Andreas Christensen – 5
Could argue that his selection in Belarus caused the Blues unnecessary problems – gave the ball away and if Sarri brings in a new defender, you have to wonder if the Dane will be part of the plans.

Emerson – 7

Cesc Fabregas – 6

Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 5
Needs the minutes and it just didn’t happen on the night, getting subbed off for Kovacic in the 64th minute. Looked frustrated to come off – big contrast to the last meeting at home with BATE where he scored a hat-trick!

Ross Barkley – 6

Eden Hazard – 6
Largely anonymous throughout his hour or so of game-time, positive that he got the playing time and will hopefully be back to his best on Sunday against Everton.

Pedro – 6

Olivier Giroud – 7
He’s off the mark! Great to see Giroud get 90 plus minutes against BATE – a goal will be more than welcomed by the boss who needs competition for Morata.

Chelsea Player Ratings – Substitutes

Mateo Kovacic – 6

Callum Hudson-Odoi – N/A
Came on the 85th minute and hardly had enough time to justify a player rating- pretty sure Blues fans will want see the youngster get even more minutes.

Willian – 6
