Chelsea turned the tables at Anfield, sinking Liverpool to a first defeat of the season thanks to a superb strike by Eden Hazard in the 85th minute.
Maurizio Sarri changed things up for the League Cup third round tie, brining in players like Caballero, Cahill and Fabregas, but the introduction of regulars such as N’Golo Kante, David Luiz and match-winner Eden Hazard eliminated Jurgen Klopp’s impressive Reds.
Alvaro Morata once again failed to find the net, playing the full game and collecting a yellow card to compound yet another frustrating night for the Spaniard.
Chelsea will now take on Liverpool again on Saturday in the Premier League and undoubtedly the momentum will be with the Blues, despite a not overly convincing performance at Anfield in the League Cup.
Chelsea Player Ratings vs Liverpool
Willy Caballero – 7
Wasn’t to blame for the goal and made some smart saves on his return to the first team – good to see!
Cesar Azpilicueta – 6
Gave the ball away in the build to former Blues player Daniel Sturridge’s goal – wasn’t a night to remember overall.
Andreas Christensen – 6
Gary Cahill – 6
Emerson – 7
Instinctive with his goal when it mattered and did well considering a serious lack of first team football.
Cesc Fabregas – 6
Mateo Kovacic – 7
Ross Barkley – 6
Underwhelming on his return to Merseyside and what an opportunity to shine against old rivals Liverpool. Worked hard but nothing really went to plan for the Englishman.
Victor Moses – 7
Willian – 6
Alvaro Morata – 5
You can almost feel the last drops of confidence falling away from Morata at this point. Had a chance to score in the first half but it just doesn’t feel like he’s any closer to the back of the net.
Chelsea Player Ratings – Substitutes
David Luiz – 6
N’Golo Kante – 6
Eden Hazard – 8
What a goal! Eden Hazard once again comes up with a big moment this season and the run and goal at Anfield shows he is a real difference maker for Maurizio Sarri.
