Sunday’s Premier League super showdown with title-rivals Liverpool was overshadowed by the omission of Romelu Lukaku from the matchday squad, but what was to come at Stamford Bridge would quickly turn the gaze to a breathtaking encounter between two sides desperate for victory.
Having gone two nil down in under half hour, frustrations were quickly bubbling at the Bridge, but a spectacular turnaround before half-time, thanks to excellent goals from Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic set up an unmissable second half.
A royally entertaining game continued at a breathless pace in the second half, with Chelsea looking for the winner vs Liverpool.
Up next for the Blues is a home first leg League Cup semi final against arch-rivals Tottenham, followed by an FA Cup 3rd round tie against Chesterfield.
Chelsea Player Ratings vs Liverpool
Edouard Mendy – 8
Impressive between the sticks, some big saves despite conceding twice. Mendy will now be away at the African Cup of Nations and after this performance, will be sorely missed.
Cesar Azpilicueta – 7
Trevor Chalobah – 7
Antonio Rüdiger – 8
Marcos Alonso – 6
Thiago Silva – 7.5
Mateo Kovacic – 8.5
Outstanding finish to give Chelsea a lifeline in the game – the best player of the first half.
N’Golo Kante – 8
Mason Mount – 7
Christian Pulisic – 8
Kai Havertz – 6
Tried to fill the Lukaku role but looked off the pace and perhaps unsurprising given the German hadn’t started a game for nearly a month.
