Chelsea picked up their third straight victory of the Premier League season away at Newcastle – with the Blues moving level on nine points with top-placed Liverpool and Watford.
The Blues’ 2-1 away victory is another encouraging sign for Chelsea fans starting to dare to dream of a surprise season, once again challenging for the title. As premature as it sounds, it appears that the player’s have taken to Maurizio Sarri’s style and tactics – the question is can it be maintained and get even better?
Chelsea Player Ratings vs Newcastle
Kepa Arrizabalaga – 6
Would be harsh to say he was at fault for the goal – was barely tested when the goal from Joselu came. Need patience to see him fully confidently take control of his box.
David Luiz – 6
Didn’t have a lot to do, but could have done better with the goal Newcastle scored – slow to react.
Cesar Azpilicueta – 6
Antonio Rudiger – 7
The German defender has picked off from his Man Of The Match appearance in the FA Cup final victory last season and has cemented himself as one of Maurizio Sarri’s first names on the team sheet.
Marcos Alonso – 8
The Spaniard was expected to be more defensive this season as part of a back four but he’s proving to be quite the asset going forward. He is like an extra man out there. Yes, he is going to be called out defensively sometimes, but that is a calculated risk. So far, the positives are massively outweighing the negatives – 1 goal and 4 assists in three games, and maximum points. Emerson will have to be patient.
N’Golo Kante – 6
Mateo Kovacic – 6
Newcastle’s compact style stifled the Croatian’s creativity, while he could have done better, the signs were encouraging for the on-loan Real Madrid midfielder.
Jorginho – 7
Eden Hazard – 9
The Belgian looks right at home in Sarri’s new set-up. Hazard’s cameo performances so far, along with his full start of the season at Newcastle – much in-part to Alonso, Kovacic and Jorginho’s performances so far. With a goal and an assist so far in three appearances, hopefully it only gets better.
Pedro – 6
Alvaro Morata – 6
Chelsea Player Ratings – Substitutes
Willian – 6
Olivier Giroud – 7
The World Cup winner is certainly knocking on the door to replace Morata in Sarri’s front-three – his header helped force the winning goal.
Ross Barkley – 5
Didn’t have long enough to influence Chelsea’s victory over Newcastle, after coming on in the 79th minute.
