Chelsea have made on the whole a decent start to the season under Andre Villas-Boas, he has even shown that he can bring the side back from a recent blip that saw Chelsea lose two games in a two in the Premiership, but how do the bookies see the first quarter season of Andre Villas-Boas’ reign?
At the start of the season Chelsea were well fancied in the Premiership betting but having already lost three games already it is no surprise that Chelsea have drifted in the outright betting. Add to that the strength of Man City in the early part of the season and the odds have been turned on their head in some situations, Chelsea were available at around 3/1 to win the Premiership before the start of the season but those odds have no more than doubled, the current price is as big as 8/1. That could still prove a big price if Fernando Torres can regain his best form and if the defence gets a little more organised.
So if Chelsea don’t win the league this season where will they finish this season? The bookies think third is by far the most likely finishing position for Chelsea who are a big price to finish in the top two, Chelsea are currently 15/8 to be placed first or second this season. Whilst a top two finish is unlikely according to the bookies, a top four finish is almost guaranteed with odds of just 1/5 currently available.
At this point in time Chelsea’s season can go one of two ways, the good way would see Andre Villas-Boas as one of the contenders for manager of the season, an award for which he is currently joint fourth favourite with the bookies at 10/1. Alternatively we have seen that Roman Abramovich is becoming increasingly impatient with his managers in his quest for success and AVB is already as low as 22/1 to be the next Premiership manager to lose his job despite only joining Chelsea in the summer, he is a best price of 40/1. It is not completely inconceivable that Villas-Boas could be given less than a season in charge of the club.
Can Chelsea still win the league? Is a third placed finish the most likely outcome of this season for Chelsea? Let us know your thoughts.
