Chelsea are apparently not yet done in their pursuit of Napoli attacker Dries Mertens, after the Blues failed to get a deal over the line in the January transfer window this year.

According to a top Italian football agent Chelsea are seemingly in talks with Dries Mertens’ team and are readying a move to bring the 32-year-old to west London on a free transfer – with his contract set to run down in the summer.

Agent Vincenzo Morabito was quoted as saying via Italian source CalcioNapoli24 via Sport Witness that Chelsea are still in for the Belgian and will likely test the water again when the transfer window reopens;

Mertens? I believe he will not renew. Chelsea really like him. He could have also gone there in January…

As far as I know Chelsea are continuing to deal with Mertens’ lawyers and it is no coincidence the Belgian has not yet renewed [his contract at Napoli].”

Napoli are seemingly a team in transition and may be looking to trim their wage bill ahead of a squad reshuffle, as such one of their top earners, 32-year-old Merterns, could be on the way out – much to Chelsea’s gain as a free agent.

Dries Mertens has so far scored 121 goals for Napoli, with 216 career total goals across all clubs played for – via Transfermarkt.
