Chelsea have reportedly made a ‘breakthrough’ in a bid to sign their number one left-back Ben Chilwell from Leicester, according to a report from Football Insider.
Leicester had been holding out for as much as £80million for the England left-back, but failure to qualify for the Champions League has left the Foxes with less leverage in transfer talks with Chelsea.
Chilwell is seemingly keen on rocking up at Stamford Bridge and that will help to fast-forward a deal this summer, with Leicester set to lower their asking price and cash-in on around £50m for the 23-year-old.
The report does warn that while there is a ‘breakthrough’ in the fee, there is still a way to go before a deal can be agreed, but the feeling is that it will get done before the season starts in September.
Marcos Alonso and Emerson could be sold to facilitate the Chilwell deal, with Frank Lampard fluctuating all season on who is the number one choice at left-back.
