Chelsea are on the verge of sanctioning a loan deal for Italian defender Davide Zappacosta to return to Italy for the season, according to a report in Italy via Sky Sports.
Roma are set to sign the 27-year-old ahead of the start of the new Serie A campaign, a logical departure from Stamford Bridge as Frank Lampard has yet to select the right-back this season.
The report claims Davide Zappacosta will undergo a medical and agree terms by the end of this week, marking a return to Italy after departing Torino back in 2017.
Zappacosta was the top choice of then manager Antonio Conte, making 35 appearances in his first season at Chelsea, but fell quickly down the pecking order once Maurizio Sarri arrived and that has continued under Lampard.
Despite a lean run of appearances in the past year, Zappacosta will depart Stamford Bridge having won the FA Cup and Europa League.
The Italian’s exit will likely mean a promotion to number two choice at right-back for Englishman Reece James who is working his way back to full fitness.
