Welcome to Tuesday’s transfer news update at CFCnet, where we look at the potential comings and goings at Stamford Bridge this summer and give our opinions on the moves.
First off, the talk regarding Southampton right back Nathaniel Clyne has resurfaced as the England International was dropped by his domestic club this weekend and has been reported to be ‘flattered’ by the interest being shown by the bigger clubs.
Chelsea have options at right back, with Branislav Ivanovic being Jose Mourinho’s first choice as well as a top right back playing at left back in Cesar Azpilicueta. I’d be surprised if Chelsea made Clyne a priority, however with Ivanovic not getting any younger and will be going one season at a time, Clyne could potentially be seen as a long term replacement there and competition for Azpilicueta. You have to also take in to account the home grown ratio that is now enforced, The Blues could well be looking at this fact.
Next up, there is a fairly new name being talked about in the shape of Nico Gaitan. The Argentinian winger plays for Benfica over in Portugal and it is reported that Chelsea scouts were watching the 27-year-old this weekend. Simply a case of a slow news day though if you ask me, I believe there are many more targets ahead of Gaitan.
Finally for now, it appears that Real Madrid have left the race to sign Inter striker Mauro Icardi, leaving it wide open for Chelsea to continue their pursuit of the 22-year-old. Icardi is a sought after forward and has bagged 20 goals already this season. Chelsea have certainly ear marked him as a high priority target as his contract talks with Inter continue to stall.
That’s it for now, join me again tomorrow for more…
