Between June 14th and July 15th Chelsea fans can put the past season firmly behind them and enjoy watching a number of Blues players representing their countries at the World Cup 2018 in Russia.
In what was a largely disappointing season in the league and in Europe, despite Antonio Conte delivering an FA Cup trophy to put some gloss on a forgettable campaign – this summer’s World Cup will feature no less than 12 Chelsea players all looking to make their mark.
Roundup of Chelsea Players in World Cup 2018
When the players return for club duty later in the summer, the club may also be welcoming back newly crowned World Cup 2018 winners into the fold, which may certainly contribute to morale and performances next season. CFCnet runs down all the players representing the club in Russia this summer.
César Azpilicueta will be part of one of the World Cup favourites in Spain, and was arguably one of the best performers for the Blues this past season, and has been one of the first teams on the first eleven time out. The Chelsea favourite isn’t guaranteed a starting spot for his country though and appears to be battling it out with Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal for that position.
Eden Hazard and Tibaut Courtois are Belgium starters every day of the week, as well as automatic picks in 99.9% of Chelsea fans starting elevens. The Belgians will fancy themselves with the names in the squad and Eden Hazard is the undoubtedly one of the stars of this summer’s tournament – and will likely be watched closely by clubs desperate to lure him away from Stamford Bridge. It would appear that if Roberto Martinez’s Belgium are to go deep into the tournament they will need the two Chelsea players to be on-song.
England’s bid to put the ghost of Euro 2016 to bed will be aided by two Chelsea players, Gary Cahill and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Blues fans will hope that Loftus-Cheek can make an impact this summer and ultimately prove himself to be a first teamer at Stamford Bridge rather than go out on-loan again. Cahill recently scored for England in a friendly against Nigeria, despite being a bit in and out of the Chelsea eleven this past season.
Nigeria will have our first choice wing-back Victor Moses in their World Cup squad and is likely to be integral to the Africans as one of their few ‘big name’ stars.
Brazil are big favourites in Russia this summer and they have plucked for our very own midfield star Willian, who has bagged over 50 caps for the famous yellow and blue. However, it remains to be seen whether the Blues favourite is a spectator on the bench or in the starting line-up due to his in and out appearances record all this past season.
France are being talked up big time by the press and there’s little wonder why with the talent at their disposal, and N’Golo Kante and Olivier Giroud will be there flying the colours for Chelsea as Les Blues look to upgrade their Euro 2016 runners-up status to World Cup 2018 winners.
One of Chelsea’s breakthrough stars Andreas Christensen is set to grace the world stage this summer with his country Denmark, and will need to perform to his best if the Danes are to progress out of a tricky looking group that includes France, Australia and Peru.
Germany will be on the march to defend their World Cup crown after winning it in style back in 2014, and will have Blues favourite Antonio Rudiger amongst their ranks. It’s not certain that Rudiger will be a starter in Russia, but if called upon will certainly not look out of place in the Germans bid to win back-to-back titles.
Last and not least is our back-up goalkeeper Willy Caballero who is known to be a bit of a penalty saving expert – however, the experienced keeper is unlikely to see much game-time for his country Argentina with Sergio Romero at Man Utd tipped to be number one.
