The Champions League is back, but it will more than likely be short-lived for Chelsea as they head to the Allianz Arena to take on the German champions Bayern Munich, who are 3-0 up from the first leg in west London.
To make life even more difficult, manager Frank Lampard is set to field a much rotated Chelsea line up vs Bayern Munich, with potentially nine players missing, including Christian Pulisic, Cesar Azpilicueta and Pedro, who all pulled up in the FA Cup final last weekend.
Willian is likely to miss out as it appears the Brazilian is close to departing the club after an impasse on gaining a new long-term contract with the Blues.
Kepa, now seemingly completely out of favour with Lampard, is once again set to be on the bench with the experienced Willy Caballero filling-in.
With Champions League qualification secured for next season, this second leg in Munich seems to be just a routine game for some of the rotated members of the squad to get the chance to prove their worth, with much needed minutes for the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi.
While the predicted Chelsea line up vs Bayern Munich on paper doesn’t appear to be anywhere near what Blues fans would ideally want to see, if they can must the spirit of the Champions League winning performance back in 2012, in this very stadium, then it could yet be a memorable night for Lampard’s side.
Kick-off for Bayern Munich vs Chelsea is on Saturday 8th August at 8pm UK time.
Predicted Chelsea line up vs Bayern Munich
Defence: Christensen, Zouma, Rüdiger, James, Emerson.
Midfield: Barkley, Kovacic, Mason Mount, Hudson-Odoi.
