The point in tuning in for this summer’s European championship diminished further as Roy Hodgson picked an unbalanced and irrational squad.
Roy has been stung by criticism that he only picks players from Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal but he can have few complaints when selecting only three centre-halves, dropping his best defensive midfielder in Danny Drinkwater and selecting a promising forward who has only played a handful of games for, er, Manchester United.
One defensive injury and we are down to the bare bones we have no defensive shape in midfield but we have taken five forwards, probably the only country in the competition to set out to the finals so unbalanced and without a coherent tactical system. And you wonder why it has been 50 years since we won anything.
Spain are taking a balanced squad, among them Cesc Fabregas, Cezar Azpilicueta and Pedro. They might need a striker but have not taken Diego Costa or Fernando Torres.
Meanwhile as Serbia played Israel in a friendly, Branislav Ivanovic scored the opener in a 3-1 win with an overhead kick. He was sprawled on the ground at the time but they all count.
Thursday 2 June
England 1:0 Portugal
Roy’s incompetence was to the fore again tonight, he managed to play Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane as wingers – which neither are – to accommodate is fetish for an aged striker who has not put in a good England performance since 2004.
The idea was to play Rooney behind Vardy and Kane but the strikers had to cover Portugal’s fullbacks and so drifted to the wings. Round pegs in square holes.
A result like this against a full Portugal squad would have been a boost but against a limited side down to ten-men for the best part of an hour it was as poor a performance as we have come to expect from Roy’s sides.

The Netherlands gave Marco Van Ginkel second-half action as they beat Austria 0-2.
Sunday 5 June
Willian and Brazil played out a 0-0 with Ecuador in their opening Copa match. Ecuador should have won when the Brazil ’keeper fumbled the ball into his own net only to be rescued by a linesman’s flag. Brazil will need to improve.
There was bad news for Michael Hector as his Jamaica side were beaten 1-0 by Venezuela.
Ghana will play in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations after Baba Rahman set up Christian Atsu for the first and Swansea City’s Andre Ayew for the second in a 2-0 win in Mauritius.
Belgium won their final warm up with Hazard scoring the second of three against Norway.
