Chelsea have been ticking along nicely this season, unbeaten in the Premier League, League Cup and Europa League – but an out and out goal scoring striker still remains the weakness – with Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud failing to find the net on a regular basis.
Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Polish international striker Krzysztof Piatek at Serie A side Genoa had emerged as the Blues’ top transfer target, with Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi also coveted by boss Maurizio Sarri heading into the new year.
However, according to the Standard Sport, Chelsea are set to face disappointment in their pursuit of both strikers, leaving the manager and the club’s recruitment team to ponder the alternatives in January.
Genoa are set to deflect all incoming interest from Europe’s elite in the new year for Krzysztof Piatek, with the club unwilling to sell their top asset and goal scorer half way through a campaign that sees them just five points off a Champions League qualification spot. The Italians will also be hoping the Pole can continue his rich vein of form and increase his price-tag further into next summer at the very least.
Quoted in the report is Piatek’s agent who says that his agent’s value is only going up and up; “Many clubs have contacted us over the last few weeks. His value has certainly risen over the three months in Serie A, but right now we are happy to remain at Genoa.”
Mauro Icardi on paper seems the more straightforward get, with the Argentine having a release clause of around £97.5 million but the player, say Standard Sport, is only keen on making the switch to Real Madrid and not Chelsea at this point.
While the news is seemingly negative on both strikers, Chelsea may yet make advances for both to see how rigid both camps stances are – it could be made easier should the Blues continue to push towards the top of the Premier League table.
