Napoli attacker Dries Mertens could be 24 hours away from being unveiled as a Chelsea players, with a report in Sky Sports on Thursday morning confirming that both clubs ‘are in talks’ to see a deal get over the line.
The Beligan international is a record-goal scorer for Napoli and despite being 32, is considered one of Europe’s top players – but Mertens finds himself out of contract this summer.
Napoli are reluctant to lose their star man but if they are going to cash-in before Friday’s deadline – a transfer fee is only expected to cost Chelsea in the region of £5 million.
Mertens has scored 118 goals for Napoli and impressively assisted 71 times, as well as having 90 caps for Belgium – boasting domestic silverware in both Italy and the Netherlands.
Chelsea have failed to capitalise on a number of good chances to finish off games this season and bringing in an experienced, proven goalscorer such as Dries Mertens would seriously boost Frank Lampard’s aim of Champions League qualification, and potential FA Cup success this season.
