Elland Road may be one of the larger grounds in the country but today it was not one of the nosiest. The travelling Blues fans were able to drown out the tannoy announcer as he read out the Leeds team before kick-off.
Once the game got started Chelsea looked keener, as did their fans. But as the first half progressed Leeds came to life. Their fans sang: “Bowyer for England” but Chelsea’s instant response was: “Bowyer for prison”.
Chelsea’s main problem is still in attack. Weah has no pace and Sutton has no idea. To his credit though, Sutton kept battling and he played a major part in the only goal. A deft lay-off set up a chance for Jon Harley who hammered it past Nigel Martyn.
The Leeds crowd went quiet again as the Blues sang their hearts out for the rest of the match. Even Frank Leboeuf managed to keep cool while the crowd booed his every touch and Kewell threw himself about. The Frenchman and Thome were superb at the back.
So with Le Saux out of contention for Euro 2000 what price Jon Harley taking his place in the England team?
