Chelsea are suddenly doing a bit of business and the imminent announcement of Mateo Kovacic on-loan from Real Madrid will be a massive boost for Maurizio Sarri’s plans and ambitions with the Blues this season.
However, the arrival of the Croatian World Cup runner-up will likely spell the end of one or two midfield options, one being England international Danny Drinkwater – who is being tipped to make a stunning return to Leicester City where he won the Premier League crown a few seasons back.
The Independent say that Leicester City are indeed showing interest in re-signing the midfielder that left this time last year for £35 million – a deadline day move that had the hallmarks of a ‘panic buy’ by the Blues and the move has ultimately failed to be a success.
Since arriving at Stamford Bridge Drinkwater has played 90 minutes in the Premier League just three times, making a total of 12 appearances in the league – scoring just the one goal across all the competitions the Blues featured in.
It would be difficult to see Chelsea recouping their £35 million on Drinkwater with just a day to go until the window closes, and whether the club would settle on an initial loan deal or permanent transfer is yet to be made clear – but it appears Leicester will make advances in the next 24 hours.
For now, Real Madrid’s Kovacic is reportedly in London right now undergoing a medical and could be unveiled by Chelsea at some point this evening. With Jorginho, Kante, Kovacic, Willian, Hazard, Pedro and Fabregas all options along with the likes of Loftus-Cheek and Barkley, the Blues have no shortage of options and talent and it could be that Drinkwater isn’t the only exit by tomorrow.
Tiémoué Bakayoko is on the verge of agreeing a loan-move to AC Milan and it’s safe to say not too many Blues fans will be disappointed by that bit of business.
