Chelsea left St James’ Park with nothing, but they certainly contributed to a wonderful game of football. The ‘bar-codes’ new hero is a £1.8m snip from French football called Sissoko.

What on earth are we paying the premier league’s most expensive scouting set-up for? Why do we never seem to identify these talents, before they cost us £20m.

Benitez argued that the turning point, on Saturday, was the incident involving Demba Ba’s broken nose. He may have had a point. However the same old story, that is destroying Benitez’ tenure, rose its ugly head. We cannot hold on to a lead!

Newcastle took the lead when Gutierrez beat John Terry to the ball and Chelsea trudged off at half time with a one goal deficit. What ever Benitez said at half time seemed to work. The Blues equalised and then took the lead with two stunning strikes from Lampard and Mata. The former is edging ever closer to Tambling’s club record. Lampard has now scored 10 league goals in ten consecutive seasons!

The game ebbed and flowed and in all fairness Chelsea could easily have won it. However, it was Sissoko’s day and he wrapped up a fantastic individual display with a well taken winner.

Chelsea move on and next up is Wigan, at the Bridge. Chelsea quite simply must win. The good news is Hazard will be back in the fold and will give us that cutting edge needed to open up a stubborn defence.

PS, is tier 7, at Newcastle, the coldest place in any premier league ground?
