French club Lyon have recently confirmed the loan signing of attacking player Karl Toko Ekambi from Villarreal, with an initial fee of just over £3 million with the potential to sign him at the end of the season. So why could this be great news for Chelsea boss Frank Lampard?
Chelsea have long been admiring Lyon’s star striker Moussa Dembele, formerly of Celtic and Fulham, and even made a bid for the Frenchman a few weeks back, only for it to be rejected flat out.
With just 10 days of the transfer window remaining Chelsea are yet to sign any of their reported top targets and at this rate seem content to continue as they are, despite working diligently to reduce their previously imposed transfer ban.
The noises coming out of Lyon still suggest they will be dogged in their ambitions of keeping their star striker, with the club president speaking to French media RMC via Football.London;
We have not changed our minds.”
We already made this issue clear in August. Moussa is an excellent player. A player who we need. We are taking explicit measures in our recruitment to not bring someone in who will compete for his position.”
It is not a question of money. Moussa will be with us.”
Moussa Dembele, 23, has scored 15 times in all competitions this season at Lyon and it’s not no surprise the club are reluctant to sell due to his lengthy contract until 2023.
