Reports in Russian news source Sport Express have claimed that CSKA Moscow and Russian international midfielder Aleksandr Golovin, who impressed at the World Cup, is subject of a transfer bid from French side Monaco.
However, Chelsea fans have been given some respite from Monaco’s advances as Bleacher Report write that the Blues remain in pole position for the 22-year old who is valued at around £22 million – a relative ‘bargain’ in this state of the transfer market.
The new Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has been a fan of Golovin for a while now and was interested in bringing him to Italy while manager at Napoli. Sarri’s admiration as well as the obvious Russian link with owner Roman Abramovich still currently holds weight and the Blues are still favourites to wrap up a deal.
Bleacher Report carry quotes from Sky Sports where Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev confirmed the clubs intention to rival Chelsea for the signature of Aleksandr Golovin;
“[It’s] a more than generous offer. The contract length offered is five years.”
“I think that a club in transition like Monaco is the best option for him, at this stage in his career.”
“Everything should be decided in the coming days, maybe even today. We cannot wait long. If it does not come off, we will look to another option.”
Blues fans will be hoping for the latter option in that Monaco will be looking at other options.
Golovin will undoubtedly be looking for assurances from whoever he joins, but with Chelsea’s obvious determination to put right what went wrong last season, and having already signed the impressive Jorginho – the disadvantage of not playing Champions League football could be outweighed (for at least one season) by the arrival of new players and a system under Maurizio Sarri that would get the best out of the 22-year old Russian.
