Chelsea have been tracking strikers this window, we all know this, one striker in particular has stood out as a fans favourite. 25-year-old Uruguay international Edinson Cavani. The supporters seem to believe that he is what Chelsea need to add fire power up front to help the likes of Fernando Torres. Whether you agree with that or not, the fact of the matter is Chelsea are more than interested in Cavani.

However, there was a price tag slapped on Cavani of over £60 million by Napoli, thus putting Chelsea off the deal and seemingly moving their attentions elsewhere. In light of this recent news, could Chelsea now be about to strike up some kind of swap deal with Napoli bringing Cavani to the Bridge and Meireles going the other way?

Raul has struggled to really make any impact at Chelsea since joining from Liverpool in a ‘panic buy’ in the final minutes of last summers transfer window. He is a consistent player but doesn’t really offer anything extra, apart from his wonder goals that he pulls out the bag on occasions. Even with that said I don’t think that any Chelsea supporters will be overly disappointed if he leaves and lets face it, he’s not really going to get many appearances this season with the quality of our new arrivals.

Meireles Benfica

So Napoli want Raul, Chelsea want Cavani, surely the sensible thing to do here is negotiation a part exchange deal? Napoli are willing to drop their asking price to £35 million for Cavani and their club president has since informed that he is attempting to push through a deal for Cavani joining Chelsea. Napoli want the money to invest on other players to improve their own squad.

Cavani is valued at £35 million, Meireles is valued at £8 million. Now I’m no mathematician (I’m actually numerically dyslexic!) but even I can work out the maths here. £27 million plus Raul Meireles will get us Edinson Cavani. Now I’m certain that Chelsea could push for more for Raul and negotiate less for Cavani, so in reality the deal could be done for under £25 million plus Meireles. But would that be a good deal for one of the highest rated forwards in Europe at the moment? It wouldn’t be a bad deal that’s for sure.
