Being top of the league by 6 clear points, with a game in hand and a marginally better goal difference, with the added bonus of just being crowned League Cup champions, you would think everything is going to plan at Chelsea. But looking at the teams recent performance there is still something that has been missing from the Chelsea side over the last few weeks. Our inability to see out games or to kill games off us something not usually associated with a Mourinho or Chelsea side, but it appears to be happening.
I feel the problem started in the F.A Cup game against Bradford, although we have had some good results and performances since then, i just feel this was the start of us missing something. Being 2-0 up and not going through is something unheard of from a Chelsea side, that’s not even mentioning the fact Bradford are a Lower league side.
Since that result we have had a few decent results against good opposition, in the like of Liverpool, City, PSG away and Spurs in the League Cup. But in between these fixtures we have struggled to either finish games off by winning 2 or 3 nil instead of scrapping wins with just a one goal margin.
Now I don’t believe the team are playing too bad, and I’m sure a lot of supports will agree with saying how well the likes of JT, Matic and Courtois have played, with all being defence minded players. So it indicates defensively we have some outstanding performers.
I feel we are really lacking competition in the no.10 position which is often filled by Oscar or Fabregas. Both are fantastic players, but i feel more Competition is needed. Fabregas performs a lot better when alongside Matic so should stay there and not be deployed as a 10 in our plan A or B, just another option there if needs be. Which leaves real competition needed for Oscar.
Having a number 10 who is slightly more direct would be so beneficial to have in the hope of pinning the opposition back more, and creating chances which could kill off opposition. At times throughout the season Mourinho has decided to swap Fabregas and Oscar in games whereby Fabregas can not get on the ball as much; so moving him creates a problem for the opposition. Yes this is great versatility from both players, but it shows that both our main No.10s can also play a deep lying playmaker role. Having competition for the a No.10 role with someone who cannot play deep and more known as a second striker, making the team more direct and hopefully ruthless when going forward.
Who? Is a great question. Solanke has been performing so far this season and trained with the England Seniors recently, but is he ready? Loftus-Cheek, is someone admired a lot by Mourinho and has said he will feature more next season. But the same question will be asked, is he ready?
I would like to see Willian deployed in this role, he has amazing energy and technique, with the opportunity to swap roles with Hazard throughout the game. This would also free up the right wing for Cuadrado to fill which would be interesting to see.
