Phil Neville has claimed that Chelsea made the worst decision in Premier League history when they sold Nemanja Matic to Manchester United (via Twitter).
It was difficult watching for many Chelsea fans. The Blues would’ve sealed qualification with a win but two goals from Stephan El Shaarawy and one from Diego Perotti sealed a 3-0 defeat for Antonio Conte’s men.
The defending was laughable at times and now, pundit Phil Neville has identified what he believes to be the problem at Stamford Bridge.
“One word: Matic,” he told BBC Radio 5Live.
“I hate going back over old ground but when you’ve got Matic sat in front of you with Kante – who has been the player of the season for the last two years – you have the best two central midfielders in the league by a country mile
“Why they sold him…whoever made that decision needs sacking because it’s the poorest decision I’ve seen in the Premier League.”
It’s a bold claim from Phil Neville and while it’s hard to disagree with the idea that selling Matic was a mistake, Chelsea are suffering from injury problems right now. Anthony Conte has a small squad at his disposal and playing Premier League and Champions League games are having a negative impact on the team’s fitness and energy.
