Well that didn’t go according to plan. Chelsea failed to capitalize on Manchester City’s loss to Tottenham. The Blues’ late game heroics allowed them one point. However, against a team that sits winless at the bottom of the table, Mourinho’s men should have been much better.
Chelsea went down 2 goals thanks to poor defending. Newcastle’s first goal was a long aerial pass into the box that found Ayoze, who was left to easily control and fire it past Begovic following another mix up in the Blues defense. It appeared as though Ivanovic called off Zouma and then failed to clear it himself.
The second goal was a corner kick, where Fabregas was left flat-footed, completely allowing his marked player Wijnaldum to score an easy header past Begovic. It was lazy and it should have cost the Blues all three points.
Chelsea played a miserable first 75 minutes. However, when Ramires and Willian came on, the Blues snapped into life. They began to apply pressure and finally they were able to get on the scoresheet.
The first goal was a wonder strike from Ramires. The Brazilian tee’d up a shot from distance and it found the upper corner, leaving Tim Krul with no options.
Chelsea found their equalizer from yet another free kick. Willian put in a good ball, Ramires made a run that put off Krul again, and the ball found its way untouched into the goal.
While it should have been a more straightforward game for the Blues, they’ll be happy with a point at the end. However, they need to be better if they are to stake a claim in the title race. Dropping points cannot be an option. Especially against Newcastle. Overall, Mourinho and all of Chelsea will be disappointed with the result.
