Chelsea will be weighing up their options in the January transfer window, with the news that Barcelona’s Croatian star midfielder Ivan Rakitic will not be offered a new long-term contract this season at the club.
Spanish news source Onda Cero via talkSPORT carried quotes from the Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu, in response to news that Ivan Rakitic wants a new, lucrative deal to keep at the club – his current contract ends in 2021.
“For this campaign, we will not be able to go through with the gesture that Rakitic is asking of us.”
“Next season we can look at it in relation to our new revenue.”
The revelation from the top man at the club will clearly throw doubt on the future of Ivan Rakitic, who now knows where he stands at the club at the age of 30. After an impressive summer at the World Cup it’s little surprise to see the Croatian looking to secure what could be his last ‘big’ contract.
The report in talkSPORT says that this will be music to the ears of some of some of Europe’s heavyweight clubs, including Chelsea. Manchester United and Manchester City will also be in the mix having shown serious interest in the past.
However, if Chelsea are to make a move for Ivan Rakitic their main competitors will be Paris-St Germain who are seemingly monitoring the situation after Josep Maria Bartomeu’s comments.
