Chelsea face FC Cluj tonight in the final matchday of the Champions League group stages knowing only a win will ensure qualification.
Scolari faces the enviable position of having Drogba and Anelka available up front, Lampard is suspended following his two bookings in France a fortnight ago but Ballack and Deco are both available tonight.
Cluj can’t be under-estimated, having beaten Roma in Rome, and drawing with us in Transylvania shows that they are not just here to make up the numbers. What can we expect of them though? If it’s anything like the first encounter then probably a few histrionics.
Should Bordeaux lose or draw tonight in Rome then we are definitely through, regardless of our result, as Cluj cannot overtake us and on games against each other we will finish above Bordeaux.
In summary whilst only a win is definitely good enough, provided Roma don’t lose we go through.
Scolari’s says he feels zero pressure, and like he says the pressure to deliver at Brazil was much greater. Having to come in during a flagging World Cup qualification bid in 2002 with five matches left to play, losing his first game and going on not only to qualify but to win the competition. This is a guy who was angrily confronted by fans for dropping Romario, who knew that anything less then winning the World Cup would be deemed a failure.
Personally I’m not feeling at all nervous for tonight, I can’t see anything less then a Chelsea win, and I’d be surprised if Bordeaux won, Roma know that they need a win to guarantee qualification as group winners.
