With Manchester City and Arsenal on the brink of elimination in the Champions League there is a chance that we could be the farthest progressing English team. It remains to be seen whether Manchester United will carry on their patchy league form in Europe but it seems unlikely they’ll suffer a dramatic transformation.

Obviously if City and Arsenal are to go out they’ll have the advantage of having less games but then we are already at that stage having being knocked out of the FA Cup. The question then becomes what do we prioritise? All three clubs have a chance of winning the league although Liverpool are in the best position of all, being just in the league and nothing else. Jose has reiterated time and time again that winning the league is not an objective this season and I can’t help but feel the Champions League might be more attractive for him.

He seems extremely confident that the forward he is planning to bring in during the summer will propel the club towards the title next season so why not go for the Champions League this season? Two of the most obvious challengers to us will be Bayern and Barcelona. In Barcelona Mourinho has a club that he will be more than determined to beat given his history with them and the story is the same for Pep Guardiola at Bayern, whilst as a club we have history with them.

Mourinho never won the Champions League with us and if he does it will be his third Champions League, setting a brand new record. This record is definitely something Mourinho has set out to achieve and he knows that both Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti will be chasing it, even though they are one behind him. Bob Paisley is the only manager to win it three times, another record that Mourinho will be chasing and I wouldn’t be surprised to see his team selection favour the Champions League in coming weeks.
