Chelsea’s reported interest in Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey could be met with a strong response from Italian giants AS Roma, who are likely to switch focus to the Jamaican youngster after missing out on Malcom – who made an eleventh hour switch to Barcelona.
Malcom’s move to Barcelona for just over €40 million has left doubt over whether the Catalans will try to pursue Willian any further. If Willian’s proposed move to the Nou Camp has been scuppered then Chelsea going in for Bailey might not make much sense.
There are a lot of maybes in this particular transfer story, but Roma appear to be in the prime position to swoop for the Leverkusen winger who impressed last season in the Bundesliga – scoring nine and assisting an additional six.
Chelsea’s new interest in the 20-year old was making headlines with the Evening Standard carrying quotes from Leon Bailey’s father who addressed the links to AS Roma;
“Being linked to a great club like Roma is an honor if it were true. I don’t know if Roma are speaking to some intermediary, but they’d have to talk to me.”
“It wouldn’t be wise not to listen to Roma, but always respecting our agreement with Bayer Leverkusen, a club that has my respect.”
Rated as one of top prospects currently playing in Europe, he would in likelihood be an instant starter for the Blues should he arrive and Willian exit, plus the added bonus of being able to speak English fluently would help him settle in London pretty quickly.
Roma though, have the cash and have the immediate pulling power of Champions League and a determination to follow-up on an impressive season last time out. The Blues may need to move fast if they are genuine contenders for Leon Bailey’s signature, or risk losing out on a player that could grace Stamford Bridge for the next decade.
