Buoyant Chelsea travel to lacklustre Liverpool, tonight, in a re run of Saturday’s FA Cup final. Chelsea had previously lost twice, at home, to Liverpool this season, so Saturday’s triumph was very much welcomed by the Blues faithful.
The end of season scenarios continue to change on a daily basis. Arsenal and Spurs both dropped points over the weekend whilst Newcastle, predictably lost to champions elect, Man City. So what does this mean to Chelsea?
Basically Chelsea need to win tonight and again on Sunday and hope that Newcastle and Tottenham slip up on Sunday, away to Everton and home to Fulham, respectively. If Arsenal lose, away at WBA, on Sunday they may miss out on a top four finish.
Chelsea will continue to rest players and rotate a tiring squad. It is vital that we travel to Munich, next week, with key players fresh. Therefore, the quartet of banned players, from the Champions League final, will surely play both remaining league games. That means a likely line up tonight of Cech, Ferreira, Ivanovich, JT, Bertrand, behind Miereles, Romeu and Ramires with Torres, Kalou and Sturridge leading the attack. Liverpool will undoubtedly play Carroll from the start after his barnstorming cameo on Saturday.
This is a very difficult match tonight. I know Liverpool have been poor, at home, this season, however this is their last home game and Dalglish will not need to use much motivation to get the reds up for revenge. I can sense another back to the walls performance is required. Torres can play his part tonight and hopefully replicate one of his more recent performances.
If Chelsea do win tonight, then I can see us securing a very unlikely, fourth spot. That would really lift the squad prior to the Bayern Munich showdown. If anyone had told me in January that Chelsea would win the FA Cup, challenge for fourth and contest the Champions League final, I’d have called for the men in white to lock them up!
RDM continues to impress and we are now 3 wins from greatness!!
