Wednesday 21 August
Chelsea 2:1 Aston Villa
Villa were very cross after this narrow win. After beating Arsenal at the weekend Villa initially looked unadventurous and we took the lead when Oscar found Hazard running into space and his shot was only parried into the net off an defender. 1-0.
The reply just on the stroke of half-time was a reminder to our defence that suddenly switched off. A cross from Agbonlahor was swept in by Benteke for 1-1.
The second-half was alive with flashes from both sides. Cech had some saves to make but the real story surrounded Branislav Ivanovic who was booked for accidentally catching Benteke with his arm before he headed in Frank Lampard’s free-kick. Paul Lambert was incensed. His mood was not helped by a late penalty decision going John Terry’s way when the ball deflected onto his hand.
Jose was caustic in comparing Lambert with his younger self but he also congratulated the Villa boss on his team.

Spurs will be pleased – Chelsea have bid for Willian who has already undergone a medical with the North London club. Another creative midfielder would appear to be just what we need just now but Willian is a special one so there is a chance someone will go out on loan to make room.

Friday 23 August
Willian is on his way for £30m from Anzhi Makhachkala. Spurs will be spitting feathers as Gareth Bale still looks like he will leave and their first choice replacement is now a Chelsea player.

Saturday 24 August
Chelsea U21 5:1 Leicester City U21
Goals and a good crowd made Stamford Bridge a happy place this afternoon. Two smartly taken goals each from Islam Feruz and Isaiah Brown left just Jon Swift to finish off a Leicester side that never gave up and got a late reward for the number of chances they created.

Chelsea U18 2:1 West Ham United U18
A smattering of rain this morning left the pitch out at Cobham a bit a bath but the youngsters got to grips in the end and goals from Tammy Abraham and George Cole made it two out of two for the youth team.

Chelsea confirmed that terms have been agreed with Anzhi Makhachkala for Willian and that all we need now is a work permit from a hearing on Wednesday. Tottenham are said to taking the news poorly.

Monday 26 August
Manchester United 0:0 Chelsea
An early title clash probably didn’t suit either manager or Wayne Rooney so the result seemed forgone before a kick was made in anger.
Jose played Andre Schürrle alone up front and he took to the task of closing down the United defence rather than attacking them.
Neither half had significant chances but Oscar managed to stab one goalwards in the first-half and Gary Cahill nearly thrashed ball and ’keeper into the net in the second.
Most attention seemed to be on Rooney who ignored all the songs and calmly passed the ball to Petr Cech instead of scoring.
The referee, for once, decided that ball had struck hand when United whined for a penalty. Perhaps Ferguson’s ghost was heard laughing; after all, you need to earn that kind of favouritism.
Both managers got what they wanted. If the game had been in April with two point between the sides it might have been a better match but in August a point will do.
Petr Cech’s 200th clean sheet for Chelsea; the Cat had 208.
