Good morning fellow Blues,
Sunday is the day of rest and this time of the year, the day or reading various reports old and new relating new players to our club, and of course, speculating who might be leaving. Today I have researched the latest rumours and will tell you what I know and make my own opinions on the happenings of silly season. Love it or hate it, you cannot help but follow it, get excited and angry by it, it’s all part of the sport that we love.
Lets start with a familiar name, Napoli striker Edinson Cavani. There is no doubt that the Uruguayan forward is the perfect type of all round target man that we need and lacked last season. There is also no doubting that Chelsea want to sign him and have shortlisted him for about three years now. The problem however, is that Napoli seem to be demanding a fee well over £50 million, which I am pretty sure we will not pay. Seemingly Roman Abramovich hasn’t been keen to pay over the odds anymore, but keep an eye on this one, if he is the player Jose Mourinho wants to bring in, that could make the difference.
We are here again, exactly a year on, talking about signing Hulk. This time though, he is located in a different area and could perhaps come a little cheaper. The player himself has stated that Chelsea are interested in signing him and as we all know, he is another of our strong targets and has been for a couple of years now. I believe we do need a versatile winger, but again I’m uncertain whether we will pay the quoted £90 million to bring him AND Cavani to Stamford Bridge.
Yesterday there were unconfirmed reports suggesting that we had sealed a deal with Leverkusen for their German International winger Andre Schurrle. The young starlet has certainly been on the agenda since last season and probably the most realistic signing for that attacking role. He can operate as a winger or a central striker although he is more affective out on the left, cutting in on his right foot. The price has dropped since last season and providing all the terms and fee’s are agreed, I can see this deal being tied up next week.
Many of you believe we need to sign another defender, and this man is being touted as a top class option and would love a move to the Premier League. Eliaquim Mangala is a 22-year-old French International defender who has recently earned his first cap for the senior team. Rated highly in Europe, he is seen as the perfect type of young defender who is already admired by Mourinho. Reports suggest that a deal of around £12 million is set to be wrapped up this week, these are not solid reports however and I have yet to see any trustworthy evidence, but certainly gathering pace.
Another young and exciting talent that Mourinho is said to be interested in signing, is Marco Van Ginkel from Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem. The 20-year old Dutch International midfielder has attracted a lot of interest from England especially, and reports from Portugal have claimed he is on our cards. Once again, nothing solid supporting this one but another to keep an eye on.
And finally, Mario Gomez is being whispered about once again. This one I feel is just another name to throw out there on a quiet day, I don’t believe this will go any further than just a rumour. A similar situation to Wayne Rooney, I don’t believe that we are genuinely interested in signing this particular striker, but anything can happen.
I will mention that of course Mourinho will have his ideas and his options, but with his up coming press conference on Monday, we might get a little more light shed on the transfer comings and goings. With the decision being made that Romelu Lukaku will be staying at Chelsea this season and possibly Kevin De Bruyne as well, these are two players who are as good as any other signing and could spell out the fact that we may well not be looking at bringing in too many new faces this summer. With the Schurrle transfer imminent and the possible capture of Cavani however, what does this mean for the likes of Marko Marin, Demba Ba and Victor Moses? Personally, I struggle to see a future at Chelsea for any of these players right now. But Mourinho will take a fresh approach and judge these players himself, I’m sure they will all have a chance to prove themselves.
