Chelsea FC is delighted to announce the appointment of Ray Wilkins as Assistant First Team Coach. Ray brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise from his time in British and European football and resumes a career with Chelsea that began 35 years ago when he signed as an apprentice.

His first team debut came in the same month and Ray went on to become Chelsea’s youngest ever captain at age 18, leading the side back to the First Division at the end of the 1976/77 campaign. Voted Chelsea player of the Year in both 1976 and 1977, Ray amassed 198 appearances and 34 goals in his six years as a player with Chelsea.

He returned to us in 1999 in a coaching capacity under Gianluca Vialli helping the club win the FA Cup and Charity Shield in 2000.

Ray has remained an important part of Chelsea FC over the years and has undertaken a lot of work in conjunction with the Chelsea Academy. He frequently skippers the Chelsea Old Boys team in their charity matches and is also trustee of the Chelsea Past Players’ Trust which raises funds to support our former players and staff.

Ray’s appointment is effective immediately.
