Years ago I turned to my dad, in the Shed end at Stamford Bridge, and asked him why were Chelsea fans booing the manager, at that time Ian Porterfield. We were on a horrendous run and losing week in, week out. My dad said, ‘we pay his wages, we pay good money to come here and we have a right to voice our opinion!’ Fair enough, I thought, but I couldn’t bring myself to boo our manager. I feel exactly the same today. Now I am not condoning Rafa Benitez, nor his cheap remarks made whilst managing Liverpool, but I have always and will always focus my energy on supporting my beloved Chelsea.
Three points, at home, against, neighbours Fulham are absolutely vital. We have almost forgotten how bad our results have been over the last month! Since beating Tottenham on 25th October we have picked up 3 points out of 15, and indeed we have only won once, over 90 minutes, in the last 8 in all competitions. Something had to give. The team need us now more than ever and it is the duty of every Chelsea fan to rise to the occasion and cheer us on to a much needed 3 points.
On Sunday, against the Champions, I thought we were more solid and we kept our first clean sheet in 12 matches. The holding pair of Mikel and Ramires covered for the fullbacks and therefore Luiz and Ivanovic were not pulled wide, as often. The fine balance between attack and defence was better. Our biggest concerns under RDM was the transitional phases when we lost the ball, the team lost their shape. Benitez will not allow that to happen.
Fulham are on a bad run themselves having lost the last 2 and drawn the previous 3. The best result was a 3-3 draw at Arsenal showing that they are dangerous in an open game.
Having played Sunday and with a tricky trip to West ham, at the weekend, I expect the interim manager to make a few changes. I can see rests for Cole, Luiz , Mikel and Hazard, with Bertrand, Cahill, Romeu and Moses coming in to the first eleven.
I call on every Chelsea fan to continue to clap the 16th minute as a way of showing the board that we disagree with the appointment of Benitez but save your voices for supporting the greatest football club on the planet!
